The first day of the WTA Makarska Open hosted by Valamar tournament has ended, the Croatian representatives had a half-hearted performance.

The young Croatian tennis player Lea Bošković was one step short of appearing in the main draw of the WTA tournament in Makarska, and Ukrainian representative Katarina Zavatska was better than her with a score of 7:6, 6:4.

However, the smile on the faces of the Croatian fans was brought back by Ana Konjuh, who in the first round very convincingly defeated the young hope of Czech tennis, Sara Bejlek, with a score of 6:4, 6:2.

"She's a young girl, we've never played together, the first match is always "tricky", so to speak, but she's happy with how it all ended," said our tennis player, adding that she's glad to be at home and to be able to play and that every match won restores confidence.

In perhaps the most interesting match of the day, played on the central court in the evening, the best Egyptian tennis player Mayar Sherif won against the Slovenian Tamara Zidanšek 6:3, 6:2. The former two-time winner of this tournament was powerless against the spirited Sherif.

Among the other Croatian representatives, Tena Lukas will play against Sweden's Rebecca Petersson at the opening of the tournament, Petra Marčinko will play against France's Diana Parry, while Antonia Ružić will compete against the second seed, Italy's Jasmine Paolini.

The program of the first round continues tomorrow.
